Improving the appearance of the smile is often a desire for many Newington, CT area patients. At Cedar Mountain Dental, Drs. Zach Korwin and Gary Toubman often work with individuals who are faced with imperfections on the teeth near the front of the smile. These teeth, known as the “anterior teeth,” may be stained, broken, or gapped. To treat these concerns, many patients consider the use of porcelain veneers.
What are porcelain veneers?
Our dentists describe porcelain veneers as ceramic facings that are made to match the patient’s existing smile and ensure a natural restoration. These facings are bonded over the tooth to cover problem areas. These custom restorations are long-lasting, reliable, and beautiful, and are a popular choice among many of our adult patients.
How old must I be to get veneers?
We encourage patients to be over the age of 18 before considering porcelain veneers. We educate patients on what they are, how they are made, and how they work in enhancing the smile. We also discuss with patients the removal of enamel which is necessary for placement. This filing of the natural tooth cannot be reversed, so patients need to consider porcelain veneers for the long haul. We also offer some other solutions for patients to consider, including composite resin bonding. Composite resin bonding can serve a similar purpose for the teeth and can be placed in one appointment, but these solutions do not last as long as porcelain veneers. Bonding may only last a few years due to discoloration, while porcelain veneers that are well cared for may last ten years or longer. The longevity of a restoration needs to be considered when making a choice regarding the best treatment. We do not encourage porcelain veneers for children, and instead may recommend composite resin bonding solutions until they are older.
