Many patients fear going to the dentist, however, sedation dentistry can give you an anxiety-free dental visit. Sedation dentistry can be used during a wide range of dental procedures.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of sedatives to relax you during your dental care visit. Sedation can be used for dental procedures ranging from a dental cleaning to more invasive procedures, such as a root canal or tooth extraction. Different types of sedation include minimal moderate, and deep.

Sedation dentistry should not be confused with local anesthesia. An injection or gel, applied directly to a local area to numb it, is not part of sedation dentistry.

What Are the Different Types of Sedation Dentistry?

There are several different ways that sedation can be administered:

Inhaled Minimal Sedation (nitrous oxide)

Using a “laughing gas” and oxygen mix, the dentist places a mask over your nose, as you inhale. Your dentist will monitor and control the amount of mild sedation administered.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is the most common form of sedation dentistry. Your dentist gives you a sedative that you take orally about an hour before the procedure. The pill(s) make you drowsy, however you’re still awake. You will receive a minimal dose for minimal sedation, and a larger dose if moderate sedation is required.

Nitrous oxide and oral sedation may be combined in certain situations:

Intravenous (IV) Moderate Sedation

An IV sedative is directly injected into your vein that provides you with deeper sedation. This type of sedation requires recovery time after you leave the office.

Deep Sedation/General Anesthesia

You are given medication that places you in a deep sleep during your dental procedure. Recovery time in the office will be required afterward.
